When did you join NSCS? I joined NSCS during my first year of college at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. I was looking for a way to get involved with an Honors organization/group on campus that focused on providing leadership and professional growth opportunities.
How did your time with NSCS help prepare you for life after college? NSCS provided a variety of career and postgraduate connections, in addition to service opportunities, social events, and leadership events where I was able to refine my professional networking skills.
What was the most important thing you’ve gotten from your time as an NSCS member? There were a lot of amazing experiences with NSCS, but I am most grateful for the handful of impactful scholarships that NSCS awarded to high-achieving students. It goes without saying that financial struggles are real in college (!!) so it was incredibly special to be rewarded for working hard during my time in Purdue’s Engineering Program.
Where are you now since graduating? Upon graduating from Purdue, I decided to pivot from a formal engineering role into a career path as a Consultant with Deloitte, specifically focused on the intersection of medical devices and cybersecurity. Excited for my first real job, I moved out to San Francisco and began the transition to adulthood. I am now a Manager with Deloitte based out of Denver, Colorado where I work with all kinds of innovative Fortune 500 medical technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical clients on their enterprise cyber strategies. Consulting is a very unique and rewarding job because it is filled with exciting travel, endless problem solving, and exposure to various levels of business and executive leadership structures. When I’m not working, you can find me snowboarding every weekend in the winter, hiking and camping throughout the summer, enjoying country music with friends, serving at my local Church, and making regular visits to see my family in Southern California.
If you could give a newly inducted undergraduate NSCS member advice on their path through their collegiate journey, what would it be? College is such a special time in your life where you will be surrounded by like-minded individuals with a wild array of personalities, interests, and goals. Be open to experiences (e.g., internships, jobs, mentors, etc.) that you might not have considered before starting your undergraduate journey. You never know… you just might uncover a true passion! But even if you don’t, that’s okay, too. So much of college is simply about figuring out what you don’t like before you finally discover what you do!
